Press Release: TV Shows Focus on Cape Otway

Issued: 19 February 2006

Cape Otway Lightstation comes into sharp focus on two TV programmes this week exploring the diverse topics of ghosts and the Great Ocean Walk.

Channel Seven’s Great Outdoors bubbly reporter Shelley Craft discovers you can now take in the region’s stunning coastal scenery on foot.

Lightstation manager Paul Thompson is looking forward to seeing the edited highlights of Shelley’s stay at the historic Lightstation, which is at the heart of the 91km Great Ocean Walk. It will be screened at 7.30pm on Monday, February 20.

Then on Wednesday, February 22, at 4pm, Network Ten’s Totally Wild will feature the story of the Lightstation’s ghost Mrs Riches.

Mr Thompson said Totally Wild reporter Natalie Hunter was fascinated by the story of the ghost known as the Lady in Grey. She is often seen and sensed by guests.

The ghost of Mrs Riches has a keen sense of mischief and is known to turn guests’ electric blankets up to high while they’re asleep.

The naughty Mrs Riches regularly flicks light switches on and off, and gets a kick out of making the phone ring in the middle of the night.

“We get phone calls from the café in the middle of the night when there’s no-one there. Weird things like that happen,” Paul said.

“It’s said that she haunts the café, which used to be the Assistant Lightkeeper’s Cottage, because that’s the last place she was happy.’‘

Mrs Riches died in Sunbury Asylum in 1908. Historians believe she was locked up after suffering postnatal depression.
