Press Release: Kids go free during July at Cape Otway Lightstation

Issued: 30 June 2009

CAPE Otway Lightstation is celebrating the holidays by offering free entry to kids for the entire month of July.

Children are admitted free, when they visit Australia’s most significant lighthouse and surrounding heritage precinct, when they are accompanied by two paying adults.

Every child receives a copy of the KIDZONE @ the Cape activity pack, and can go in the draw to win a two-night family getaway at the Lightstation.

Manager Paul Thompson said whales were being spotted almost daily from the lighthouse balcony, 80m above sea level.

Families got a real thrill from standing on the balcony looking for whales, fishing boats and passing ships, knowing there was nothing but ocean between them and Antarctica, he added.

“Kids can let their imaginations run riot here – we have the historic Telegraph Station which is said to be haunted, standing at the top of the 1848 lighthouse is always a thrill, and we also have the World War Two radar bunker,” Paul said.

“Our cafĂ© serves great hot chocolates and affordable, tasty winter-warming food,” Paul said.

“The stands of manna gums on the Lightstation Road are prime habitat for koalas, and they’re easy to spot,” he added.

Children who visit the Lightstation and the Otway Fly during the school holidays can also enter a competition to win a family pass to Melbourne Aquarium.

In August, the Lightstation will be celebrating International Lighthouse Weekend, an annual event with historical re-enactments, entertainment, kids’ activities, dinner & ghost tour.
