Press Release: International Lighthouse Weekend at Cape Otway Lightstation

Issued: 22 July 2009

PARANORMAL investigators armed with ghostbusting gear plan to make contact with an ‘intelligent haunting’ at this year’s International Lighthouse Weekend at Cape Otway.

Australian Ghost Adventures’ paranormal detective Gary Sullivan and his team are looking forward to their ghostbusting tours on August 15 & 16 at the festival which celebrates lighthouses and the people who worked in them.

Mr Sullivan said while there were a lot of ‘residual hauntings’ at the 1848 lighthouse and heritage precinct, intelligent hauntings were far more rewarding for ghostbusters because they were able to engage with them.
Mr Sullivan said he was looking forward to working with a psychic medium at the Lightstation.

“We call them psychic profilers because they pick up on residual hauntings – these ghosts are like an imprint, they won’t ever go away,” he said.

Residual hauntings, of which there were many at Cape Otway, accounted for the fact that some ghosts were seen in the same place, many times, always doing the same thing, by different people, Mr Sullivan added.

Apart from ghost tours the festival weekend includes live entertainment, the chance to send a telegram via Morse code to friends & family around the globe and kids’ activities.

The Victorian Colonial Infantry Association will re-enact the sacking of the Lighthouse’s first keeper – who lost his job due to ‘ungentlemanly behaviour’.

There will also be a buffet dinner on the Saturday evening, and the rare chance to see the lighthouse at night.
Lightstation manager Paul Thompson said the annual event was growing in popularity with people coming from as far as Melbourne to spend the weekend in the Otways and attend the festival.

“The fact that we’ve had so many whale sightings this winter, and people stand a very good chance of seeing whales from the lighthouse balcony during the festival, just adds another dimension to our great line-up of activities and entertainment,” Mr Thompson said.
